Huma Energy Gel Review and Giveaway. An all natural energy fuel, finally!

I know that a lot of you guys use energy gels as fuel for running, cycling, swimming, or any other endurance sport. I have always been a Shot BLOK fuel user because the gels make me want to throw up mid run. I am not sure if they just don't agree with my stomach or what, but I cannot use them at all. Not to mention the aftertaste you get. It just doesn't work for me. I have always hated it because they are so portable and easy to take for quick carbs while running. I have always wanted them to taste good and trust me I have tried just about every flavor. No luck!
Until Now...
My great friend Ray called me up and said OMG I have this wonderful energy gel to try. I was like hmmm, ok Ill try anything once. He told he had picked up an all natural gel at Cycle Therapy in Mobile called Huma, and that I needed to try it. I checked it out out on the Internet and contacted them for information on the gels.
So the awesome guys over at Huma sent me some samples to try.
Apple Cinnamon
Strawberry
The first thing I noticed is that I could pronounce all the ingredients in both gels. And that all of the ingredients were all natural. Oh and of course they had my beloved cha-cha-cha-CHIA in them. SCORE

Who is Huma?
Hüma is a brand new Nashville-based company that makes all-natural, great-tasting energy gels people enjoy eating. It was started in January 2012 by Ian McCollum and Kevin Sherbourne, two young Vanderbilt students who were tired of awful energy gels. Hüma gels were officially launched in November 2012 and have since seen their popularity expand like crazy! (From the website)

Where did Huma come from?
The idea for Hüma was born in the sands of Iraq. In the summer of 2009 a US Army soldier named 1st Lieutenant McCollum was charged with leading grueling missions throughout Iraq. At the time he was reading a book about the Tarahumara, a tribe of Mexican Indians who regularly compete in epic 100+ mile races as part of their culture. To fuel themselves on these ultramarathons, they use a special chia seed blend. He figured if it worked for them in Mexico, maybe it would work for him in Iraq.
It did. In fact, the stuff was amazing at keeping him going, and that discovery eventually led to the creation of Hüma. Today, Hüma brings together Tarahumara tradition, sports nutrition research, healthy ingredients and great taste as our best shot at helping you enjoy your gel. (From the website)

So on my 8 miles on Sunday, I tried the strawberry and it was delicious. It had no aftertaste and gave me the energy I needed at mile 5 to finish my run. I was so excited to have FINALLY found a  portable squeeze energy gel that I could stomach and not throw up mid run. YAY

The best part is that the great guys over at Huma want to give you guys a chance to try Huma Energy Gel. They are giving (5) 6 packs of gels to give to 5 winners.

  4. I'd love to try these! I usually us GU, vanilla or espresso, but I'm ready to try something better. I also like Luna Moons, I think they're called, but they are kind of hard to find.

  5. This looks like an awesome alternative to the typical gels with ingredients I can't pronounce! I'd just have to test out how my body tolerates rice syrup, but other than that, these look awesome! Thanks for introducing them and then allowing others to give them a try!

  6. My favorite gels are Pocket Fuel gels. Its almond butter or hazalnut butter blended with some fruit and tastes amazing and real.

  7. I've tried GU and Cliff Shots Gel. Both tend to leave my tummy in knots afterwards. I want a gel that has words that I can pronounce!

  10. I generally use Clif Shots. I really only like two flavors - strawberry and mocha. I have become a fan of GU in peanut butter.

  11. I have a lot of gel issues too...they upset my stomach, but they're so much easier than gummies!

  13. I've only ever tried GU and hmmm...I can't remember other brand right now. That said, I don't often use any energy gels but I do very much appreciate them when I need them :)

  14. I haven't tried any of the gels. For fuel I have tried Sport Beans and Honey Stinger gummies. I am currently training for a half marathon in March and a full in May and need to find a good fuel that is easy to carry on my long training runs and for the races.

  15. I have never used gels because they have always grossed me out a bit. I don't like the idea of highly processed fake energy I guess – probably not fair, but something about the idea of gels hasn't sat well with me. SO to hear about an all–natural supplement is great!! I would LOVE to give them a try for that extra boost during a hard run.

  16. These sound great! I currently use Hammer gels and this may be petty but they're so large it's a PIA to fit them in my fuel belt.

  17. Must...do...research....must...try...Huma!

I've tried some other gels and I agree that they leave a taste in your mouth. But, I'm still willing to try different ones. And a natural one will be nice to try!

  18. I've been experimenting with fuel over the past few weeks. Shot Bloks, Gu, Clif Shots, Honey Stinger Chews, Gu Chomps ... *sigh* my IBS tummy likes none of them too much. I would be ecstatic if Huma didn't leave me running to a portapotty at mile 11!!

  19. OH! I haven't really been a fan of gels in the past, but with chia? I'm definitely interested!!!

  20. I love SHOT BLOKS too but I have used Gu and Chocolate #9 gels quite successfully in the past as well. Would love to try these though as I am off sugar these days and need something different. Thanks for the opportunity.

since it is all-natural, is it completely gel? I have texture issues.

  22. I usually try to stick with Gu if I need a gel. Not really impressed with any gels on the market. They all leave you feeling a little yucky!
